Word on the street is that the soaps (at least Y&R) are going to stay on the air. There are a variety of conflicting reports about how that is going to happen but it seems that they are finding a way. The veracity of this article has been hotly contested, but you get the idea... For your reading pleasure.
This is a quote is from someone who claims to be a "longtime WGA member" but who knows? I don't care for anonymous quotes, but I like the sentiment either way:
"I’ve known from the beginning that I’m in the minority since I do not subscribe to the philosophy that the collectivist lemming approach is a healthy strategy as our guild is driven off a cliff. Our leaders are arguing over a future that, in ten years, won’t matter. Distribution will be open to anyone with guts, creativity, and a fat digital pipe.
We’re destroying lives and futures and careers because our leaders want a piece of a disappearing pie, when we can be baking the damn things ourselves in the very near future.
Go ahead. Flame away.

You obviously have way too much free time on your hands...will you come take care of my baby?
Sure.
It will be nice to have someone who will actually play with me!
